As Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’s leading primary care dental provider we deliver dentistry with social impact. We own and operate dedicated expert West Country Dental Care clinics and high street dental practices under our Brighter Dental brand. An award-winning, forward thinking and innovative organisation, we are one of the South West’s largest NHS referral and essential care/emergency providers and function as a staff-owned community interest company. As a social enterprise we have clear rules about what we do with our profit to ensure we reinvest back into the communities in which we serve. Our Brighter Smiles campaign brings practical tooth-brushing clubs, educational visits and fluoride varnishes to children in areas of high decay across Cornish communities.
Our Brighter Smiles campaign kicked off on World Oral Health Day and attracted significant interest in the fact that tooth decay is the number one reason 5-9 year olds are hospitalised each year. Since then we have educated over 900 children and visited over local 30 schools. In June 2017 a team of 27 volunteers travelled over 1500 miles in Cornwall providing oral health treatments and oral cancer screenings for the elderly, disabled, homeless, refugees and fishermen - the feedback we had was overwhelming. We are recognised nationally, and won or been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards. Our clinics have seen over 40,000 patients, run over 6,000 hours of emergency treatment sessions and treated almost 5,000 special needs patients, over twice the number we are contracted to see.
We continue to grow our business and now have over 100 employees working across 13 clinics in Cornwall and the isles of Scilly, plus a specialist dental laboratory DPS (Dental Prosthetic Solutions). In being a staff-owned Community Interest Company providing both NHS and private dental care, our model allows us to provide dentistry with social impact, where surplus funds generated are reinvested into community dentistry alongside oral health and prevention. In addition, our Staff Council choose a charity to support each year - in 2016 we raised over £1000 for CLIC Sargent and in 2017 over £1200 for The Alzheimer's Association, with many of us now more dementia aware.
