Snakey Sue's Serpent Sanctuary
15th May 2014
Since 1996 we have taken in peoples unwanted pet snakes and to create an income for their care we run educational, science presentations for all age groups.
We can take up 20/30 snakes, with the help of volunteers, for educational visits to schools, clubs, team-building, phobia busting, fetes, fun-days and special needs groups. We can take snakes to wherever people need educating concerning them, which is the majority of the population.
Since 1996 we have visited innumerable schools, fetes, fundays, teambuilding, corporate events, holiday clubs, scout groups, nurseries and TV appearances. We have inummerable testimonials, the following is a good one:
Snakey Sue visited my school on Tuesday morning (5th February 2013) as part of our celebrations for the Chinese New Year of the Snake. She visited all our key stage 2 classes and encountered some children with a snake phobia! However, 100% of the children said they had completely changed their views on snakes during the time they handled Sue's gorgeous reptiles. Some even talked about contacting her to get a snake of their own. Sue is so knowledgable, so calm and so passionate about snakes that this immediately puts everyone at ease.
When two corn-snakes were purchased in 1992 I joined a reptile club to learn more about them; I began rescuing in 1996 when it became obvious that there were very few rescue facilities for these particular types of animal, they live 20yrs or more and people are not often able to keep them for all their lives.
Shortly after I was asked to attend a local childrens club with some snakes, this went well, so as there is no available funding for animal rescue, apart from private donations I saw this as not only a way of creating an income to care for them but also as an educational, science project for all age groups; so few people know anything about snakes, especially adults. I have also had many volunteers coming to my rescue facility to learn animal husbandry over the years.
